At my former high school, Perry Hall High, they have had for many years a program that provides mentoring for male African American underclassmen. Senior and junior males are suggested as mentors or mentees by their teachers based on their academic and extracurricular achievements. Like many of the clubs, programs, and sports in high school, this mentoring program is pitched to the schools administration. The people that start these programs are alums, parents, or students from the school. You have to determine who would act as your sponsor or adult supervision, the predicted budget, goals for the program, and location and times for the meetings.
I am starting a mentoring program for the girls of phhs. There are so many issues that girls face coming into high school, so I felt like having someone who is doing well doing well for themselves acting as a role model would be good for these girls. First, I had to undergo training from the head of the male mentoring program. He acted as my mentor by helping me choose a sponsor, write lesson plans to train my volunteers, and letting me sit in meetings where he trains his male volunteers.
Doing volunteer work like this is fun and you always take something from it. I learned lessons from the male mentors and hope my program for the ladies of phhs is just as successful.

The commute from home to college during the week can be expensive, especially when driving it 2 or more times a day. Due to my separation anxiety from home, I find it hard sitting around campus for a few hours, waiting for my next class. Instead of enduring this torture of wandering and lounging around college for 3 hours, I end up making my way back home, only to have to return in a few hours. There have been times when I have attempted to ignore the urge of returning to my original community.
During this I try to check out what CCBC has to offer. I may have 2minute long conversations after classes, venture to the library, or even relax in one of the many cofortable chairs that just so happen to be in interesting places all over the college campus. However, all of these attempts fail, and I end up back where I began before college, driving around a community I have gotten so used to. I relocate back to this community due to its familiarity. I hang out with and talk to high school friends, volunteer at my high school, attend their games, visit neighbors, neighborhood parks.
However, by staying in my home area, I, not on purpose, neglect my college experience. I still dont know all the clubs, the sports teams, nor upcoming events. I struggle with the separation from my past communities, and I'm not sure how to break the habit.Go Gators, Home of the Gators, Gator Alumni!!! (whats the mascot for CCBC? I dont know...do we even have one?)
After struggling with transitioning completly from High School to College, it will probably be easier to transfer to a 4-year school since it wont be as close as community college. At a four-year school, I will most likely be living on campus. This will make it harder for me to be able to leave college too often and return home. At Towson, their education program is really popular. With this being my major, it will be easier to determine my place at the college. This should hold my attention more on school and campus life rather than the next community yard sale in my dads neighborhood.

Rockin' Rappin' Barbie
Barbie has been one of the most famous brands aimed at female youths since the sixties. With the various dolls, styles, trends, and accesories, Barbie has been re-invented in this commercial from 1992 as a rapper. During the early ninties, rap itself reached its highest level of popularity, with Barbie taking full advantage of this modenity. Children are convinced that this doll is "happening, hot, and cool". Therefore, by owning this doll, they too will become "happening, hot, and cool". This commercial features beat-boxing, hip-hop dances, vibrant colors, and the rap styles of young girls that own this doll.
The Rappin' Rockin' Barbie marketers want children to believe this product will make them cool by teaching them to rap, dance, and dress in during the trends rap has set in motion. Also that girls should look, dress, and act like Barbie. This commercial also advertises boom-boxes, Barbie gang, and energizer batteries. This advertisment pushes children to try to blend in with what others believe is cool, jump on the bandwagon. It doesnt explain that buying a barbie is not going to make friends for you. Not to mention, Barbie cannot rap. The doll never says a word in the commercial nor dances, though the girls explain Barbie can rap and dance to her "happening" beat created by her boom-box.
*Dolls each sold seperately (;
She can act like a star, she can beg on her knees.

My Name
With a name as uncommon as Kabria Newkirk, I was sure I wouldn't find too much on its origin. To my surprise, I discovered things about my name that I found randomly surprising.
Last Name: Newkirk
- Newkirk was originally spelled Nieuwekerk, a dutch surname meaning "new church"
-1880: The western population of Newkirks increased from max. 12(1840) to max. 91
-The number of Newkirks in the north east region increased by hundreds over the 40 years
-There are no records of any Newkirks residing in Louisianna between 1840 and 1920
-Immigrants from England, Preussen, Bimcas and Agris, Germany, Philipines, France brough the name Newkirk to the United States
-The largest amount of Newkirks immigrated in 1865, 1880, 1886-Between the years 1950 and 2000, it has shown that Newkirks tend to have a longer life expectency than the rest of the population, average expectency being around 87 years old
-According to the 1880 u.s census, 41% of the Newkirks were farmers, 6% Laborers, 3% farm laborers, 2% carpenters, and 2% blacksmith

First Name: Kabria
Pronunciation: Kuh-Bree-Ah
An analysis of the name Kabria shows...
-I want to help and understand others, but I get too involved in their lives, causing too much worry on my part
-I adore children and carring for them
-I long for my own family and have the ability to create peace, harmony, and mutual agreement in the home
-I prefer not to hurt other peoples feelings and tend to avoid arguments-I enjoy working with others
I love my name. I could'nt imagine it being anything besides Kabria. People consider my name to be pretty and unique. Every once in a while, my name is mispronounced. Somtimes my name is pronounced Kay-Bree-ah, Kay-Bree-Nah, and Kuh-Bree-Nah. I only find it annoying when people add and N into my first name and call me Kabrina. I've also been called Capri, Cabrona, Ka-bri-bri, and Kabby.
My nick names include KBB(my dad), Ka-bri-bri(my comedian wannabe friends), Bria(family), and Bri.
No matter how many nicknames I have or gain, how many times my name is mispronounced, or is confused with Wine, I honestly wouldn't change it.
